Many are trying to rebuild what's left of their lives after the devastating Humboldt fire that swept through the ridge. The Humboldt fire that burned over 23,000 acres and close to a hundred homes was started by an arson.
Although police are still investigating leads and information about the suspect (or suspects), the arsonist still hasn't been caught. It may only be a matter of time before another arson like the Humboldt fire, happens again. The dry season and high winds make fires uncontrollable and late fall is the worst time of all. Arsonists also know this fact and it's during this time that they are more likely to set fires.
Arsonists are usually repeat offenders, setting more than one fire, or routinely set fires. Some do it because they are thrill-seekers, others may suffer from a psychological condition, known as pyromania. Fame is another motive and arsonists often collect news clippings or reports about the fires they have started. Revenge, vandalism, boredom (among teens and pre-teens), and even insurance are other motives for arson.
Targets for arson are usually abandoned buildings, isolated areas where few people are present and alleyways that are hard to see from the street. However, other places such as schools, churches and religious buildings, abortion clinics, public buildings or domains and business have been targeted by arson. It's best to assume anywhere at anytime is a usual target for arson or any other crime.
Firefighters, police and other agencies are working to combat these examples of arson but people from the community can also take action to help prevent the setting of fires (or accidental fires) that can quickly turn into a disaster. Community awareness is a key factor in catching any criminal and the same is true with arson. When people are aware of their surroundings and the people in them, they are more likely to know suspicious behavior when they see it and report it to the authorities.
Watch for suspicious behavior such as people loitering near vacant buildings, playing with matches or fire, or people who are out late at night or early morning, and pay attention to people who appear in strange places more than once in a vehicle. If in doubt, call the police. Assisting police with leads and information can help with any investigation, including arson. There are usually anonymous phone numbers people can call to report anything suspicious. Citizen Patrol groups train with the police department and can help minimize the potential for arson to occur.
Parents must educate their children not to play with fire and discourage them from using matches, lighters or other fire-setting tools. Teaching fire safety is also a good method to educate children and deter improper fire use. The Chico Fire Department also offers resources and information in preventing fires. Go to: http://www.chico.ca.us/Fire/Frequently_Asked_Questions.asp for FAQ's.
Everyone can help prevent fires and arson from happening. If you know someone who set a fire, report it to the police immediately. Arson is a serious crime and by not reporting it, you are making it worse. Call 9-1-1 if you see a fire or someone starting a fire. The call will be routed to the fire department and the police if necessary. All calls can be anonymous and will help prevent a disaster, like the Humboldt fire, from occurring.
