The Christmas Village in Philadelphia began in 2008 and with 150,000 visitors it is hoping to become an annual tradition. It is based on the traditional Christmas markets of Germany, some of which date back to the 15th Century. Fifty booths and two timber houses provide shelter for 34 vendors ranging from art, jewelry, ornaments, sweets, and hot chocolate. Santa will also be there! For a list of vendors go here. The official Christmas Tree Lighting of Philadelphia will also take place here.
Hours: Open daily 11am-8pm (Sunday to 7pm), 11/26 to 12/24)
The Philadelphia Orchestra can be a memorable evening that will provide the ultimate soundtrack to your Christmas experience. Glorious Sound of Christmas is ideal for listeners of all ages. To see the list of songs performed and/or purchase tickets, go here.
Performances: December 17,18,19 @ 7pm
One of Philadelphia's trademark holiday traditions is The Mummers Parade. It dates back to 1901, and at its peak attracted millions of spectators every year. Local clubs spend the year building intricate floats and creating elaborate costumes to compete in 1 of 4 categories: Comics, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades. Watching the parade is free, and tickets can be purchased to 1 of 2 judging events held at the Philadelphi Convention Center. For a link to information on The Mummers Parade including ticket information, go here.
When: New Years Day starting at 7:50am, ends in the evening
My favorite holiday tradition is driving around to see the beautiful holiday decorations that people display. If you are like me, then why not join Fairmount Park and take their Holiday Tour of the historic Fairmount Park houses? Seven historic homes are completely decked out in their best holiday finery. Tours will show you these wonderful homes while pointing our the historic traditions of Philadelphia. If you'd like, special lunch of brunch services are available at the Water Works Restaurant before or after your tour.
December 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13
Part of what makes Philadelphia great during the holidays is watching the world with the people you love. Go to Rittenhouse square and sit on a bench. Watch holiday shoppers bustle up Walnut, wishlists in hand.
