How to Caulk Your Bathroom Floor

Caulking your bathroom floor prevents possible moisture damage from occurring along the perimeter. Caulking the area where your baseboard meets the ceramic floor can prevent rot and mold damage. As a bonus, it also makes the area easier to clean, preventing dirt from sliding underneath the baseboards.

Step 1: Clean the baseboards and area of the ceramic tile floor immediately adjacent to the tile floor. Use a soft bristled scrub brush and floor cleaner to remove any soap scum from the area thoroughly.

Step 2: Vacuum any gap between the ceramic tile and the baseboards around your bathroom floor.

Step 3: Prepare a tube of silicone acrylic caulk. Cut the top off of the caulk, creating a 45 degree angle with an opening that is about ¼ inch wide.

TIP: Unless your floor and baseboards are both white, use clear caulk. If they are both both white, however, purchase white silicone caulk.

Step 4: Slowly depress the caulking gun trigger until the caulk flows out of the nozzle. Wipe off the caulk with a damp rag. If the caulk does not flow freely, use a nail or other long thin device to poke the seal that might have been created within the silicone caulk tube.

Step 5: Place the end of the caulk tube along the gap and slowly depress the lever, creating a bead of caulk. Run this bead of caulk along the length of the room, corner to corner of one wall.

Step 6: Dip your finger into a cup of water. Use your wet finger to smooth the caulk into a uniform, concave shape.

TIP: People who can create a thin, perfect bead may not want to smooth the caulk. There are also tools you can purchase to shape the caulk. into a perfect 45 degree angle. This may be preferable for people seeking a truly uniform appearance.

Step 7: Caulk each side of the bathroom floor using this method.
