How to Celebrate a Green Mother's Day for an Eco-Friendy Mom

Ideas for a Green Mother's Day

Jean Marquit
Environmental awareness is rising, and there are many who are interested in eco-friendly practices. You might have an eco-mom. If that is the case, than you need to celebrate Mother's Day in an eco-friendly fashion. It is possible. Here are some ideas:

Food

Have an organic Mother's Day dinner. Try to find locally grown produce and foods. Also, try to get certified organic foods to use. These are generally grown in a more eco-friendly fashion. It is possible to get eggs, meat and a variety of produce that is eco-friendly (and often local). Consider seasonal recipes. Look for seasonal foods and produce, and that will make it easier to get something locally. If you want to be heart healthy, consider getting fish. But be careful! There aren't any standard organic labeling rules for seafood, so something that says it is organic may not be. Some ideas for eco-friendly seafood include US farm-raised caviar, wild Alaskan salmon and Alaskan halibut.

If you eat out, pick a small, locally owned restaurant. There are many such places sprouting up around the country, offering seasonal foods and more.

Flowers

It is possible to get locally grown flowers in most places. In some places, it is even possible to get flowers grown using organic methods. This can be a real treat for Mother's Day. Another idea? Grow your own flowers for the occasion. Or you can get different houseplants to decorate the area. If your eco-mom likes plants and flowers, offer some of the decorations as gifts.

Gifts

There are quite a few eco-friendly gifts out there. And many of them would be great for mom. There are Web sites and stores that sell items made from recycled glass. This can be anything from glasses to fanciful artwork and figures. If your eco-mom like beautiful glass objects, consider buying recycled glass gifts.

Another great gift idea is a nightgown or a bathrobe made from organic cotton. This is an environmentally friendly way to make clothing. And cotton is soft and luxurious. But watch out! In the US, only the method of growing is certified. Something can be certified organic cotton but still use harmful chemicals and dyes during the process. Also, there are other articles of clothing made from organic cotton, including shirts and scarves.

Sometimes your eco-mom lives far away. The good news that there are ways to get her some gifts for Mother's Day as well. There are companies that specialize in organic goodies. And if you have the company ship them, it can be better on resources, since routes are optimized and items in close areas are sent together.

Celebrating Mother's Day in an eco-friendly way can be a great way to show your mom that you care for her -- and that you care for the environment.
