How to Celebrate Mother's Day when your Mother is Gone
When Mom was alive, my siblings and me would get together and do yard work for Mom. It was a day spent trimming the bushes, mowing the lawn and planting flowers. We also brought the patio furniture, the barbeque grill, and the birdbath out of storage and placed it in the yard. When we were finished, we would gather around the patio furniture and visit.
When Mom died, I knew that I had to make plans for myself on this day. In the past, I have attended a mall opening, and gone to a city garden. This year I have already made plans to take part in a walk-a-thon. Perhaps next year I will go to the zoo or museum.
Even though I make plans for myself, I do not forget the reason for the day of celebration - my Mother. I get a Mother's Day card and go the cemetery. I usually tell her what is happening in my life and events with the rest of the family. I think she would be pleased that I stay in touch.
With each passing year since her death, Mothers Day has become less painful for me. Since this system seems to have worked for me, I will continue to make definite plans for myself on that day.

I know how certain days make me feel sad since the death of my Mum almost 4 years ago. It isn't Mother's Day that bothers me, as I do not celebrate that occasion. But the anniversary of her death upsets me. So I have an inkling of what you are saying.
