Rear Brakes Are Important Too

Things you'll Need

Wheel chocks
Jack
Jack stands
Brake cleaner fluid
Tire iron
Pliers
Mallet
Flat head screwdriver

Chock the front wheels and release the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts with a tire iron 1/2 turn. Raise the rear of the Civic with a jack and position jack stands under the chassis rails. Remove the rear wheels and set them aside.

Remove the drum brake covers. If they do not come straight off, use a rubber mallet or hammer and a piece of wood to tap the edge to break the seal. Wash the brake dust off with brake cleaner. Allow it to dry before continuing.

Use a pair of pliers to remove the self-adjusting cable and spring from the lever. The spring will come away from the brake shoes. Then remove the springs from the brake shoes and remove the parking brake clip.

Clean the inside with a wire brush once the shoes and cylinder are out of the drum. Fit the new brake shoes and refit the springs and clips. Use the pliers to keep the tension while you slide the shoes in place.

Refit the hand brake cable and spring. Repeat the above steps for the other side then adjust the star wheel with a screwdriver to set the shoes. Use sandpaper on the inside of the drum cover then refit it. Use the mallet to tap it into place. Make sure you can turn the drum by hand.

Reinstall the wheels then lower the car from the jack stands with the jack. Pump the brake pedal a few times and test the emergency brake as well.
