As time has gone by, the task of changing a baby's disposable diaper has always been depicted as a nightmare. A wiggly baby, "dirty business", smelly, wet and just something that is hated before most even experience it. Well, I am here to tell you it is only that way if you want it to be!

My kids are adults now and I don't remember back that far, but my 6 year old grand daughter is where I remember figuring out this trick and now with my new grand daughter, it still works like a charm. I have been complimented many times at how quick and neatly I change her disposable diaper and I still can't figure out why people think it is such a dreaded nightmare. But, I guess anything can be a nightmare if you make it that way. For me, I choose to change the diaper and move on in life! Playing with my little one is what deserves my time, not wasting it because of an old wives' tale.

So here's how I do it. Try it yourself! It might take you a few times to get the motion and progression going, but if you want to get out of the diaper changing nightmare, or if you need Dad to do his part in the diaper changing area, give it a try! Figure it out and spend fun time with your baby, instead of making yourself a wreck over a simple little dirty diaper!

First, have all supplies near by. Powder, wipes and diaper - and of course, the child in need! Before you start, have the powder open so all you have to do is grab, shake and replace. Have the wipes opened and ready to pull out.

Lay your baby down on the changing table/area. Give the baby something to play with. It's a good idea to have special toys just for diaper changing time. This will give the child something new to play with that they are not familar with and can concentrate on playing with instead of trying to roll over and get moving! Just get a 3-4 little toys and leave them at the changing area - that will be the only time the baby gets to play with those toys so the toys will be "new" and exciting to them each time. I have tested this theory and it works! The point is to get the baby to focus on something besides what you are doing and Keep them involved with something else, and they will lay still! And talk to the child. I don't mean baby ga-ga-goo-goo talk. I mean talk to the child like they are the intelligent human being that they are! Tell them what you are doing and why and what you will do when you're done. Tell them a story or sing them a song. The distraction from what you are doing will be what keeps the baby still so that you can work quickly and easily. Remember, babies aren't stupid, they're just babies.

So here we go - First, take the clean diaper and open it up. Pull the back waist area firmly from side to side, pulling the tabs to seperate them from the diaper so the back of the diaper lays flat. Don't pull the tabs open, just pull them so that they are clear and ready for you to grab when you need them. Do this same procedure to the front waist band area. There are no tabs on the front, so just pull the waistband area so it is open and lays flat. Lay the opened, flat diaper to the right side of the baby.

Open the dirty diaper, but don't take it out from under the baby yet. Grab a wipe or two and clean the baby appropriately. When done, lay the wipes in the diaper, covering any "dirty business". Now comes the "two-handed-fast-action" trick. With your left hand, slightly and gently, lift the baby up with their legs while with your right hand, starting with the front part of the dirty diaper, start rolling up the dirty diaper toward the back of the diaper. This will make all the "dirty business" and the wipes stay in the diaper.

Now that the dirty diaper is in a roll, pull it away from the baby and lay it out of the way, and grab the clean diaper. While still holding the baby at a slight angle by their legs, slide the the clean diaper under the baby. Position the baby on the center of the diaper and then let the baby rest on the diaper. Grab the opened powder and shake where needed. Next, with both hands, pull the front of the diaper up and straighten it out neatly over the child's belly. With your left hand, hold the front of the diaper in place and with your right hand, pull the right diaper tab from the back of the diaper around to the front of the baby's waist and stick the velcro tab to the front of the diaper. Keeping your left hand still in place on the diaper over the child's belly, with your right hand, grab the left velcro tab and pull it around and secure it to the front on fthe diaper. If an adjustment is needed, just pull a tab open and make the adjustment. These days, that is easy, as the tabs are repositionably for better fit. Back years ago, you got one shot to make the diaper fit right. Once that tab was stuck, it didn't come off! Your only help was duct tape or masking tape!

Now, baby is clean and happy and can be on it's way! Quick, easy and no trouble! Lastly, just pick up the dirty diaper and take one tab and stick it to the diaper roll. Take the other tab and pull it around the diaper. rolling the diaper into a ball and securing "everything" inside the diaper ball. Then drop the little round bundle in the trash can or wherever you deposit dirty diapers in your house! If you are traveling, keep some ziplock baggies in the diaper bag and this nice, neat little bundle fits just fine in the baggie. Zip it closed and look for the next trash can for deposit! How easy is that! Pretty easy, if you ask me!
