How to Change a Fuel Filter on a 91 Dodge Stealth

Gregory Johansson
Fuel filters should be changed around once a year and certainly not more than every 30,000 miles. The job is fairly easy although it can be dangerous as there is gasoline involved, remember to be careful at all times and wear eye protection.

Tools

Open ended wrench

Rags

Eye protection

New fuel filter and washers

Fire extinguisher

Procedure

In order to perform this task, you must work with a cool engine and relieve the pressure in the fuel system quickly in order to not allow the engine to heat up quickly.

As the fuel injection system is under high pressure, you can relieve the pressure by locating the fuel pump fuse inside the fuse box. With it located, you can start the engine and then quickly remove the fuse. The engine will die and the pressure will be released. Do not skip this part as the high pressure could cause an explosion.

Wearing the eye protection, locate the fuel filter. It is located near to the fuel tank, under the floor or inside the trunk behind the carpets, depending on which model you have.

Using two open ended wrenches, loosen the bolt and lock nut going to the filter, one at a time, the banjo bolts can then be set aside. Cover the bolts with a rag when they are almost undone. This will stop any excess pressure squirting fuel. Do the same for the other side of the filter and slide the filter out of the holder. Be careful when removing the filter as it might still be full of fuel.

Fit the new washers to the banjo bolts which you removed. These are crush washers therefore the old ones cannot be reused. Slide the new fuel filter back into the holder and reconnect the fuel lines. Be careful not to cross-threads and only do it by hand until you feel some tension.

Torque up the bolts to the correct specification and then refit the fuel pump fuse. Double check the connections and then you can start the engine. It may take a few tries to get the fuel through the system again. Now the job is completed and you can enjoy better gas mileage and know your engine will be safe from any contaminants.
