How to Change a Furnace Filter

Sammy Bones
Replacing a furnace filter is fast and easy once you know these few steps. Don't be afraid to jump right in on this home project because it is so easy that you will want to try bigger home improvement projects after you complete this small task.

I first want you to understand why you need to change a furnace filter in the first place. A filter cleans the air that is being returned to your heat and air unit to be recycled back into your house. These filters catch dust and other pollutants that could damage your air unit and more importantly pollute the air that you are breathing according to www.home-findings.com Everyone wants clean air, so replacing your furnace filter is a must for keeping the air in your home pleasant. You can also replace a filter without turning anything off.

The first step is to locate your air return for your system. This is usually a metal panel that looks like an oversize air vent. Next there are small tabs around the edges that you pull out to open the vent. There are usually 2 tabs, but there can also be 1 to 4 tabs depending on the size of your air unit. These tabs should pull out by hand, but if they are stuck, then use a screwdriver or pliers to help you. If you don't have any basic tools, then a butter knife probably would do just fine. Once you have the outside panel open, pinch the end of the filter with your finger near the top or bottom and pull the filter towards you.

At this point, you can tell what size the filter is as there is a label on the end that displays the dimensions. You will need the correct dimensions for a replacement. In the photo I have here, this particular filter is a 24x30 filter which is 24 inches by 30 inches. All of these filters are a standard thickness so all you need to worry about is the width and height. You can find replacement filters at any hardware store and even Wal-Mart carries them. The cost is anywhere from 99 cents up to $20 or $30 depending on the quality of filter that you wanted. The more expensive filters usually last longer and they filter out more fine particulates from the air. Once you have your filter, simply pull the old one out and place the new one in the same position. These filters are just sitting in there without anything holding them except for the outside vent panel.
