How to Change Gravely Lawn Mower Oil

Maxwell Payne

Gravely makes a wide range of home and industrial-use mowers. Like many mowers, Gravely mowers utilize a gasoline-powered engine for power. Motor oil is used to keep the internal engine parts lubricated. According to Gravely, oil should be replaced with fresh oil after every 500 hours of operation to ensure proper operation and reduce the risk of damage to the engine components.

Locate the oil filter attachment on the back of the mower near the rear left wheel.

Place the oil pan or small bucket directly underneath the filter. Slowly turn the filter until it comes loose. Place the old filter off to the side and allow the oil to drain into the pan or bucket.

Pour a small layer of fresh oil on the gasket of the new filter. Firmly screw the new filter into place, ensuring it is tight. When the filter tip gasket creates a seal with the filter housing on the mower, turn the filter an additional half to three-quarters turn to lock it into place.

Remove the cap to the oil reservoir above the filter and fill with 5 quarts of oil. Replace the cap, double check the filter tightness, and make sure the oil dipstick is in place.

Run the engine for 1 to 2 minutes. Shut the engine off, and check the oil level on the dipstick. The level should be between the high and low marks.

Wait for the engine to fully cool before attempting to change the oil.

Do not handle the oil or other fluids with your bare hands. Avoid contact with skin. Avoid contact with eyes and avoid ingesting any oil fluids.
