How to Change a Header in a Wordpress Theme

Kelly Fleming
Themes are numerous files that come together to create a designed website. Different themes are important to follow along with what the site is about. Headers are at the top of the site that paves the way for the design. Changing a header can be a difficult process if using hosting, and not a template.

Figure out the size of the current header. In the Wordpress administrative area, under appearance, click on editor. This will bring up Edit Themes. Look for the style.css file on the right-hand side. Scroll through and look for #header. The width and the height amount is what are needed to write down.

Save the header that will be used to match the width and the height. If you are making your own header, the size of it will need to fit the one that is in the theme. Most programs will give an option of the size to save, but it will vary depending on what program is used. If the size is not correct, the header will not fully show or look strange.

Log into the cPanel of the hosting site that is being used for the Wordpress theme. In the cPanel open wp-content and click on themes. Locate the current theme being used and open it. Look for the folder named images.

Locate the header in the images folder. This file could have different names, but the most common are logo.jpg and header.jpg. Open the file to make sure it is the current header. Rename the file to anything but the default.

Upload the new header. Rename the header to the default. If the original was logo; rename the new header to logo. In the theme editor style.css file the header will point to a specific name. It is important to change the header to this or it will not show up.

Verify this worked before everything is closed out. Open up the website and check if done correctly the new theme headed will load perfectly. If not the pages are still opened to make sure everything was entered right.
