How to Change Your IP Address

John Smith
Privacy on the Internet is something of the past. While the Internet used to be an anonymous web forum for people to interact, today our privacy is under attack constantly online. From cookies tracking which websites you have visited to your search queries being logged, privacy is a thing of the past.

One of the main ways that your privacy is compromised is through your IP address. Your IP allows a user to know everything there is to know about you, including your location as well as your ISP.

So, if our IP tells other users on the Internet too much information about us, we should be able to change our IP to prevent our privacy from being compromised.

There are several ways to change your IP but this primarily depends on the type of connection that you have.

If you have a dial-up connection, every time you connect and disconnect from the Internet you will receive a new IP. The same is true for dynamic DSL connections where if you reconnect to the Internet once again you will receive a new IP. These types of connections are the easiest ways to always get a new IP and make sure that your private information is kept private.

If you are using a cable provider, or static IP address, changing your IP is more difficult. One way is to unplugged your modem and leave it off for a few hours. If you leave it off longer than your IP lease time you will receive a new IP once you come online. Another way to change your IP is to use proxies. Proxies are simply gateways your computer travels through which allows your privacy to be kept confidential. By using a proxy outside users see the IP of your proxy rather than your actual IP. One very good free proxy to use is TOR. TOR or the onion network uses a very interesting technology where all users using the network share IPs. This allows any user on the network to use another user's IP as an exit node so their actual IP is not shown. While TOR is one solution, there are also paid proxy lists which allow users to have access to exclusive proxies so that no one else can use their IP or proxy.

Internet privacy can be a major concern, and therefore having a method for changing your IP is a must. By constantly changing your IP you can make sure that your private information is kept private, and that people will not be able to track any of your information.
