How to Change Your Mailing Address with the United States Postal Service when Relocating
A Guide to Moving
You will need to change your mailing address so that mail, which is sent to your old address, will be forwarded to you at your new location. If you do not switch your mailing address then your mail will continue to go to the old address and you will lose it forever. If you would like to switch your mailing address there is a few simple steps, which you should follow:
Find out when you will be moving so that you can alert the post office to your intent on relocating. They will need to know the date, which you will be moving, and your new address. Once you have this information you can go to your local post office and ask them for a new address packet. They will hand you a document, which asks about the date of the move and allows you to choose if you would like the mail forwarded or held.
Fill out the document and answer the questions to the best of your ability. It should take you no more than two minutes to fill out and you can hand it back to the clerk who will either process the hold or the forwarding request. If you are going on vacation then you should choose hold so that you can pick your mail up once you arrive back in town. Once you have filled out the document your request will be filled within 2 weeks and you will start to receive all of your old mail at your new address.
