You will need the following items to change the oil in your Mazda B 3000:
funnel
4.5 quarts of recommended oil (SAE 5W-30)
proper oil filter (FRAM PH3600 or equivalent)
new oil drain plug gasket
wheel chocks
jack and stand, or truck ramps
oil filter wrench
container to collect old oil
an old glove to wear on hand adjusting filter
clean rag/cloth or paper towels
cardboard to use when you are laying beneath your vehicle
Here are the steps to change the oil in your Mazda B 3000 truck:
1) Warm up the engine of your Mazda B 3000 until it reaches the normal operating temperature.
2) Set your parking brake fully. If your transmission is manual, set the gear selector to 1 (First). If your transmission is automatic set the gear selector to P (Park).
3) Set a wheel chock behind each wheel to block the wheels on your Mazda B 3000 truck. This will ensure that your vehicle does not roll out of place while you are working underneath it.
4) Remove the oil filler cap from the engine area. A jack may be used to raise your Mazda B 3000 up so you can get to the oil filter and drain plug easier. Make sure the vehicle is supported with a jack stand before attempting to work under your vehicle. Another solution is to drive your truck up a set of truck ramps, to raise it off the ground.
5) Position yourself underneath your Mazda B 3000 's engine area and locate the drain plug on the oil pan and the oil filter on the driver's side of the engine. Use caution working near the exhaust components of your vehicle, as they will be very hot.
6) Position a pan or other container under the oil drain plug at the bottom of your engine. Wear an old glove on your hand to remove the drain plug to avoid being burned by hot oil. Also be careful to hold the drain plug against the threads as it is being unscrewed. When you are done unscrewing the drain plug, pull it away suddenly to avoid dropping the plug into your drain pan and getting hot oil on your hand.
7) Watch the oil as it drains to make sure there are no metal particles in it. Once the oil has drained completely into your container, make sure to wipe the drain plug and the mating surface on the oil pan with a clean rag. This will prevent contaminates from mixing with your new clean oil and ensure a good seal.
8) Screw the drain plug with a new oil drain plug gasket back into place making sure not to strip the threads by tightening too much.
9) Move your drain pan or container underneath the funnel spout mounted under the oil filter. You will have to feel for the spout to locate it.
10) Using an appropriate size oil filter wrench, turn the oil filter counterclockwise to loosen it. If the filter is too tight to loosen by filter wrench, you may consider using a screwdriver for additional leverage. Drive the screwdriver through the lower side of the filter case. Use the screwdriver to help loosen the filter. Beware of oil spurting out when you do this.
11) Once you have loosened your old oil filter, use your hands to completely unscrew it from the engine block. As you remove the filter, hold the open end up to avoid spilling oil out.
12) Use a clean rag and wipe off the area on the flange where the oil filter mounts onto the engine block. Be sure the flange is clean and free of the old filter gasket.
13) Compare your old oil filter to your new one and make sure they are the same type.
14) Using some new oil, smear engine oil around the gasket of your new filter. This is the circular rubber edge around the oil filter that attaches to the engine block.
15) After filling the new oil filter with new oil, screw the new oil filter into place on the engine block, using your hand. Be careful not to tighten it excessively because you will damage the gasket. Make sure to follow the directions given on your oil filter package for this step. It usually requires a ½ to ¾ turn past contact with the mounting area.
16) Remove all tools and your drain pan from under your truck. If needed, raise the truck using the jack, remove the jack stand, and lower the truck back to the ground.
17) Lift up the hood for your truck. Locate the oil filler cap opening, then place your funnel in the opening. Pour approximately 4 quarts of oil into the funnel.
18) Wait a few minutes, then use your dipstick to make sure the level of oil in your engine is the recommended range. If it is, screw the oil filler cap back onto your engine. Close your truck's hood.
19) Start up your Mazda B 3000 and let the engine run for at least 1 minute. Check to make sure no oil is leaking from under your truck. If you notice leaks, you may need to tighten your oil drain plug or oil filter more.
20) Remove the wheel chocks from behind your Mazda B 3000 's wheels.
21) Record the mileage and date the oil change was performed so you can schedule your next oil change. Many auto parts stores offer free stickers you can place on your vehicle to record this information.
Note: You will need to discard the old oil as it can be an environmental hazard. Many automotive stores including Advanced Auto Parts will take your old oil for you. Check with your local automotive parts dealers and service shops to see if they will take your old oil.
Also be sure to check your Mazda B 3000 for oil leaks as well as the dipstick level during your first few trips after an oil change. This will ensure no serious problems occur while you're on a future road trip.
