How to Chase Customers Out of Your Store

Todd Hicks
Do you work at a store where new shoppers quickly make an exit and those who make a purchase never return? If so, it probably has a lot to do with what you or your fellow clerks are doing. There are different mistakes that employees can make to hurt their store's business. You will learn the ways you can chase customers out of your store.

You are rude to them. One way that you can do this is to display a lack of manners or courtesy. Another is to talk over them, continually talk to your colleagues or talk on your cell phone while you are supposed to pay attention to them.

You act like a detective. You either watch them very closely or you follow them around as though you expect them to try to steal something.

You are not well informed. You neither know how your items work nor know where a lot of them are located.

You ask them, "Can I help you?" This can show a lack of concern. A better approach is to greet them genuinely and then ask if they need assistance.

Your store is messy. One mistake that you can make is to have a dirty store. Another is to have things out of order.

You are too inattentive. You either lack focus or you do not listen to them.

Everything is about you and everything must go the way you want it to. You are argumentative and unyielding.

You take them for granted. You cannot be bothered to smile and thank them for their business.

You are not fit to be around. You either do not look presentable or you smell bad.

Your merchandise is not a good fit. The quality of it is bad and all of your prices are too high.

You treat them like they are just numbers. You cannot be bothered to remember their names or what their personal circumstances are.

You make it so that they cannot fix their mistakes. You do not offer refunds or exchanges.

You have a know-it-all attitude. You treat them as though they do not know what they are doing or talking about.

It is not convenient for them to shop here. You do not have enough checkout lanes open and you do not have a sufficient supply of merchandise.

You have learned mistakes store employees make. Keep in mind what you have learned to retain your customers!
