How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance for Seniors

Maggie OLeary
With the current economy, everyone is looking for ways to save money on everything they can. There are several ways to find deals on automobile insurance for drivers of all ages. If you are a senior citizen over the age of 60 and are looking to change insurance companies, redo your policy or just lower your premiums, there are a few things you can do to help your budget.

Current Agent

First, speak with your current insurance agent. See if your agent can offer discounts for senior citizens. You might also wish to change to a different type of policy with the same agent to save some cash. Your insurance agent can inform you of your options with your current insurance company, or you can go online and get a price quote with your current insurance company to get a general idea of what you are looking at.

New Agent

Speak with agents from several other insurance companies and do some comparison shopping. You may wish to choose a company with a senior citizen discount. Compare coverages, deductibles, terms and conditions and other aspects of each policy so you can get the best bargain as well as the best coverage.

Change Coverage

You may wish to change your deductible or amounts of coverage to reduce your insurance premiums. Just make sure that this won't cause a hardship in the event of an accident. A low deductible will raise your insurance premiums, while a high deductible will cost you more out-of-pocket in the event of a crash, but lowers your premiums drastically. If you have a healthy savings account, it is a great idea to increase your deductibles, but if you are living on a tight budget with very little savings, keeping your deductibles low is a wise idea. In addition, you can decrease your coverage to help save money. Just make sure this won't put you in a bind in the case of an accident.

Bundle Products

It also helps to bundle your insurance products. When you put your automobile, homeowners or renter's insurance with the same agent, you can save money. It is also possible to add in your life insurance and other products to help decrease your premiums. Most insurance companies lower your premiums when you keep all of your insurance business with the same company. Speak to your current insurance agent or prospective insurance agent about this option.
