Check my Case Status
Fortunately, the USCIS Web site has a page dedicated to helping immigrants check their case status. Start off by clicking here to get to the homepage and then click on the "Check my case status" which can be found on the lefthand side of the homepage under "Customer Tools" and then under the second subheading, "After I file". This page is in English as well as Spanish.
Application Receipt Number
Once you have navigated to the "My Case Status" page, you will be asked to enter your application receipt number. This is the 13-character number that appears on all official application notices from USCIS. The application receipt number starts off with three letters. Dashes are not part of the application receipt number and should be omitted when entering your personal application receipt number. But if your application receipt number contains other characters apart from letters and numbers, you should include these. Once you have entered your application receipt number, click on the green "Check Status" button.
Automatic Case Status Updates
If you would like to receive automatic case status updates via e-mail or text message, you will need to create an account. You can register as an applicant customer or as a customer representative. Click here to learn more about how to sign up for automatic case status updates.
Applicants must allow sufficient time once their application has been received by USCIS before they receive word back on the status of their case. A receipt notice is usually sent to let applicants know that their package has been received. They must then wait as USCIS goes through several stages such as acceptance, initial review and so on before a decision is reached.
