How Can I Check for Crib Safety?

Charisma
Your newborn sleeps up to 20 hours a day. After a couple of months your infant may sleep less hours. You may want to be able to provide your newborn or infant in a comfortable crib. The crib must be safe for your newborn or infant. Be sure if you buy a used crib that is safe and clean. Also that is approved by today's standards. The crib should be well installed and no loose parts. When purchasing a new crib, look for Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association (JPMA) certification. Don't get overwhelmed with extras shown in the stores. For example colorful hanging toys. Safety is the number one while your baby sleeps.

If you buy a used crib be sure there is no peeling paint on the crib. If your infant swallows the paint it could be harmful. Be sure the crib is also clean before using it. Wash the crib & mattress with hot water & Murphy's Oil Soap. A good way to clean a brand new crib to remove dust and wood particles is use damp cloth.

You also need to be aware of the bars on the crib. Be sure the bars of the crib are close enough that would prevent your baby from getting her head caught between them. To check the space between the bars use a soda can. If you place the soda can and it slips through the space, the bars are to far apart. If this happens do not use the crib. It not safe at all. When assembling the crib be sure you follow directions. Dont leave any missing crews, improperly installed screws, brackets because this also could cause danger.

Use a firm, tight-fitting mattress with a fitted sheet. Do not use a loose fitted sheet, your infant could suffocate. Do not place stuff animals, pillows, or comforter inside the crib. This all could suffocate the baby. Keep all cords away from the baby. This includes curtains cords, blinds, and toys. Your infant may get caught in a cord and strangle. If you decide to use a blanket, be sure to tuck it in around the foot and side of the mattress. Bring the blanket up only to the baby's chest, to keep it away from his face. You could also consider using a sleeper instead of a blanket. Makes sure that your baby sleeps on a firm mattress in a crib not a soft one, and place the baby on his/ her back while using the crib.
