In life, especially within the business world, you can never be too careful when dealing with various companies. Whether you are about to make a business deal, or you are wondering if you should purchase a product from a certain company, it is very important that you check out the legitimacy of that company. But how exactly do you check this? Finding out the legitimacy of a company is quite easy, especially in today's information age, and to do so, all you will need are a couple of tools:

1. Newspapers (go to the library and search throughout the newspaper archives)

2. A Library Card

3. Computer with Internet Access

4. You home telephone

Before you begin your search at your local library, you will first need to ensure that call your local Better Business Bureau if you are dealing with a local company, however, if the company you are dealing with is national, than the national hotline at the Better Business Bureau will be where you need to turn.

Once you have called the BBB, you will need ot ask them several important questions. The first is whether or not there has been any complaints filed against this company. If there have been complaints, ask the BBB to provide you with all of the information concerning these complaints. If there are no complaints on the business, ask how long the business has been registered with the BBB, because sometimes a business that has been in operation for quite some time will not register with the BBB until just recently.

After you have done this, you will want to visit the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is a public company that will provide you with information on the various lawsuits that have been filed against a company. You will need to visit the Legal Proceedings" section within this commission to find out all of the information you need to know.

There are also many other documents that you can find within the Securities and Exchange Commission, which will allow you to learn about the background information on a company and whether or not they have questionable practices or even fraud.

To discover who is backing a certain company, you will need to visit the Secretary of State's office within your local state. This office will provide you with incorporation documents that will inform you who the leaders and various individuals are behind the company.

Visit your local library and search through the newspaper archives to find any information about the company your are dealing with. While you are at the library, get on the Internet and do a basic search on all of the main search engines. Doing this will provide you with any public information regarding the business practices of a company.
