How to Check Someone's Credit Report

Lea Barton
Every person who is over eighteen and will need credit in the future needs to know how to check their credit report. You may even have checked your credit report already, but need to show a friend how to check their credit report. This article will show you how to check someone's credit report so that you and your friends and family can keep on top of the important items that are reported on your credit history. By keeping close track of your credit report you will ensure that your credit is good and ready when you want to purchase a car, a home, pay for college, or any other need that is based on your ability to receive credit from lenders.

Search the internet for a credit report access website such as Annual Credit Report. There are many of these available so try and find a free or inexpensive one that offers access to all three main credit reporting agencies at the same time.

Choose a website. Base your choice on cost and information availability. Some credit reports will also include the FICO credit score, which is very important to monitor.

Request the credit report. There will be a place on the website where you can order the credit report. Make sure that you order the "three in one" credit report if possible, which gives you your reports from Transunion, Equifax, and Experian, the three main credit reporting agencies in the US.

Fill out the information they require. They will definitely need the social security number of the person who is getting the credit report. Most likely they will also want to verify identity by asking you questions about where you live, your recent employers, and recent credit purchases.

Get your credit report. Once you have given them all of the information they require you will have instant access to the credit report on-line. If you've chosen a website that charges a fee, you will need to pay this fee first. If you choose to make a request by mail, you will receive a paper copy in a few weeks.

When you check your credit report make sure there are no false items, and if there are then dispute these items. It illegal to obtain a credit report on a person without their permission.

Beware of reoccurring credit monitoring services. You may be able to get a free credit report now, but they will charge your credit card if you don't cancel.

Checking someone's credit report (including your credit report) is a helpful way to learn more about a prospective employee, client, partner, and so forth. In the end, the credit report information helps you to make informed decisions.
