How to Get Your Child into the Game of Hockey

Hockey Can Be a Very Rewarding, but Expensive Game

Scary Good
As a young child I decided that I wanted to play hockey. My parents were behind me 100% and were willing to fund whatever it was that I would need. Little did they know how much money hockey was going to take out of their pockets? Yet they still allowed me to do what it was that I loved, and still played for any little cost that occurred because of hockey. Without all of their support I would never have been able to realize and gain all of the knowledge that you get from the game of hockey. If you child wants to get into the game, please do not hold them back, just understand it is going to cost some money. First you are going to need to buy and re buy equipment. You are going to need to pay for leagues and tournaments, and finally all of the gas and other costs that can come from the game

Obviously the most important part of hockey is the equipment. Without it your child would not be able to play in organized leagues. When buying equipment for the first time I highly recommend that you go to a used equipment store. Yes some of the equipment is going to be beat up, but you will have the final decision in what you decide to buy so the equipment won't be bad at all. The reason I say this is that first you have no guarantee that your child is going to enjoy hockey and want to keep playing. Secondly if your child is young they are not going to need all the fancy top of the line equipment just yet, as they are still just going to be learning. As they grow older you will need to purchase better equipment because the leagues will start to get more and more physical.

Now once you have purchased all the used equipment your child will need, you are going to need to get them into leagues and classes. The first step is to give the nearest hockey rink a call and ask if they have any house leagues you could sign your child up for. If they do you need to take a drive there and get your child started on their hockey career.

Along with getting your child into their first league, you are going to want to look into classes or camps. Camps are not going to be a big thing at a younger age, but there are a few classes there for younger kids. You can get your kid into a power skating class which will greatly increase their skating. There are also many other classes including stick work and things like that. If your child is serious about the game, then you need to be serious about how they learn the game.

As your child grows older you're going to want to continue them in leagues, and send them to camps that you feel are necessary and ones that you can afford. Like I said earlier you are going to need to upgrade their equipment as they grow, but it won't all be at once so it won't be so expensive. If your child is truly in love with the game of hockey and will be for years to come, then you need to take the right steps to get them into the game.
