How to Get Your Child to Take a Nap

Jeanne Marie Kerns
All parents know that when it is nap time, that means everyone gets a little rest and relaxation for a certain amount of time. Getting a child use to taking a nap can be a little difficult, once it has been accomplished the child will take a nap everyday at that exact same time, unless of course you are out and about. Even then when the child gets home, nap time is a definite must.

1. One of the best ways that I have found to get your child into a routine of taking a nap is feeding them lunch, followed by a nice, long, warm bath. That way their bellies are full and their bodies are clean and ready to dream.

2. Make nap time all about the child. Let them know that there is nothing wrong with taking a nap, that it actually is good for their little bodies. Once they understand that it is for them and not a punishment of some sort, the nap time comes much easier.

3. Allow them to choose a stuffed animal, blanket or one specific toy when they are going down for their nap. This gives them a sense of security allowing their minds to be at ease, and Mr.Sandman to come sooner.

4. Read a book that is for children. Once the child begins to get into the reading of the book, their minds relax and sleep comes much sooner. If you prefer, tape record yourself reading a book and play it next to their bed when it is time for their nap.

5. Soothing music will always put a young child to sleep. Not music with words, just nice, soothing music. Turn it on a low volume and greet Mr.Sandman with a huge smile.

6. Be sure when you lay your child down for their nap, that the television is off. If you leave the television on, children no matter how tired they are will stay up and watch it. Once the television has been shut off, they understand that it is time for nap time.

7. Last but not least, take a nap with your child. Children love to lay down and cuddle with their parents. When parents take a nap with their child, I can guarantee the nap will last longer than any nap that they will take by themselves.

Another great article. Thank you so much for writing this. Although I am not married and do not have kids but I will keep this in mind. Thanks once again.
