How to Childproof Cabinets

It is very important to childproof your home when you have children. According to WebMD, unintentional injury is the number one killer of children in the United States. WebMD has some childproofing steps that you can take to keep your children safe and to prevent most injuries. One of those is to install safety latches for childproof cabinets. This includes every room in the house where items can be dangerous to children in any way.

It is very easy for anyone childproof cabinets. There are many different styles and shapes. The easiest way if you don't want to drill a hole in your cabinet is to buy a self-adhesive mount magnetic cabinet lock to childproof cabinets in your home. One Step Ahead carries an Adhesive Mount Magnetic Cabinet Lock for $19.95 for two locks, key, and key-holder. This is a great item for cabinets without doors and you mount the lock inside the door, which takes 24 hours for the adhesive to set and to open the cabinet, you place the magnetic key on top.

Another easy way to childproof cabinets, which is cost effective, is to purchase spring and release latches that requires some drilling. Babies R Us has a Safety 1st Spring & Release Latch-3 pack for $2.49. These are very easy to install. First, you will want to take your spring latch and mark it with a pencil where you want to put it on the inside of the door of your cabinet. Next, you will want to drill a little hole where you marked your pencil and then add your latch and screw it into the door of your cabinet. After you have installed the spring latch, you will attach the catch on the inner side of the cabinet and position it exactly where you would like to place it. You will then drill a little hole on the inside of the cabinet and position it exactly where to match the latch. You can attach it with double-sided tape to make sure it matches the latch before drilling the hole. Add the catch and screw it into the inner part of the cabinet and you are done.

There are many different types of spring and release latches that you can buy. Each one will come with different types of instructions, but they are all basically the same. You can also watch a video on YouTube if you are a visual person to help you childproof cabinets in your home.

I thought I was done with these, but I have a nine month old grandchild, so I may have to invest in some now that she's more mobile.

I have always had difficulty with the safely locks. My kids could always get into but I couldn't.

Good info on childproofing cabinets, another useful tip is to put anything that might be a danger is to put them up high and out of the reach of small children.

This is such important info. I know my husband's nephew has a habit of getting into everything and I'm so afraid one day he'll find something dangerous or swallow cleaning supplies.

Cherie, thank you, times three! I have 3 grandsons & I took this advice to heart. It's amazing that these "child proof caps" are not impossible for young hands, even if they are to grandpa's. Great & most important info. Thanks. Thumbs Up! : - )
