How to Childproof Your Kitchen

Your kitchen can be one of the most dangerous places in your home for your kids. In this part of your home, there are often knives, sharp tools, hazardous chemicals and other things that can bring harm to your children. Therefore, it is very important to childproof your kitchen so they can be in the kitchen without worry. For ways to make your kitchen child proof, follow these guidelines.

Keep sharp utensils in one place

You should start by having your knives stored in one place. All of your sharp utensils should be kept inside drawers that can only be accessible to you and other adults. If your children can reach into the draws, you may want to consider locks. There are many different types of drawer locks that work very well.

Use safety latches

If you have low cabinets in your kitchen, you can use child safety latches for them. Do not store harmful objects in a place that they can access. Make sure that you keep sharp utensils in the top cabinets.

Turn off electrical appliances

If you have electrical appliances in your kitchen, make sure that you turn them off after use. It also is a good idea to unplug appliances while they are not being used. Your stove and other heat sources should not be accessible to small kids. Keep chairs away from tables where your kids can climb up. Electrical cords should be kept out of children's reach.

Trim tablecloth

Choose a tablecloth that fits your table just right. Your table cloth should be out of small children's reach. If not, they might pull it and everything on the table could potentially fall off, including glasses and other hard objects. You should also keep your table clear of any hot drinks that might fall on your children.

Preparing food

When you are preparing food for your kids, make sure that you clean the food thoroughly before cooking. Cook your meats and other foods thoroughly to avoid instances of food poisoning. Always make sure to wash your hands with a germicidal soap prior to handling food.

Assign a kitchen cabinet for the children

Your kitchen should not be something alien for your kids. Make one portion of your kitchen safe for your children to explore. For instance, have a low kitchen cabinet open for them where they can get the utensils for themselves. Make sure that no hazardous materials or utensils are kept in this "kid" cabinet. It should also be away from the stove.

Additionally, always be aware of what your children are doing while in the kitchen. Make your kitchen childproof so your kids can explore the kitchen and learn to love this part of your home.
