How Children Can Learn the Parts of a Plant

Alicia Bodine
By learning about botany, children will be able to see how plants get their food and grow.

You will need the following items:

Parts of a plant diagram
Parts of a plant worksheet
Plant
Shovel

Follow these steps:

Step 1:
Review the parts of a plant diagram in the resource section. This picture clearly illustrates each part of a plant and it's name. This is the first step in learning the parts.

Step 2:
Memorize the parts of the plant from the diagram.

Step 3:
Print out the parts of a plant worksheet. The plant is there, but you have to label it yourself. Keep working on it until you can label all of the parts without looking.

Step 4:
Go outside and find a live plant to work with.

Step 5:
Name all of the plants parts while pointing to them. You may need a gardening shovel to observe the roots.

Step 6:
Take a field trip to a garden and have a guide discuss each part of the plant more in detail.

Tips:
Grow your own plant so that you can see all of the parts developing yourself.

Warnings:
Be careful not to damage the roots while you observe them. Then replace the dirt to leave the plant the way you found it.
