How to Make Children's Party Invitations

Handmade invitations for a kids' party have several advantages over standard invites available in most party goods stores and card shops. They are less expensive, can be creative and made to fit a specific party theme and can even be personalized with a photo of the party boy or girl. All it takes is a few standard craft supplies, construction paper, and a little creativity to make special party invitations your guests will enjoy and appreciate.

You will need the following items:

8 1/2" X 11" construction paper (color determined by theme)
Scissors
Glue stick
Crayola classic markers
Picture of the birthday boy or girl
4 3/4" X 6 1/2" envelopes

Follow these steps to create your invitation:

Step 1

Choose a theme for your party and note any colors that go along with the theme if applicable. Get out colored construction paper that will go along with your party theme. For example, a little boy might want red for a firetruck party. A little girl may want pink for a princess party. Some other themes include a slumber party or a country western party.

Step 2

Turn your construction paper so that it is horizontal. Then fold your construction paper in half from left to right. You will not need to cut the paper. The front is for decorating, and the inside is for all of the party details.

Step 3

Decorate the front of the birthday invitation. You have two options for this. You can trace a shape (firetruck or princess hat) onto the front of the birthday invitation, and then cut it out so that the card is the actual shape you cut out. You could also leave the card the shape that it is, and draw an object on the front of it that reflects your theme. For example, you can draw a firetruck on the front of the card. You can even glue a picture of the birthday girl or boy on the front.

Step 4

Use markers on the inside of the card to list the party details. Crayola classic markers will not bleed through paper and are preferred. You will need to tell the guest who the party is for, the date of the party, where the party is being held, and an RSVP number. Add any extra information to your card that you want the guests to know such as bring sleeping bags or wear costumes.

Step 5

Make sure you mail your party invitations at least two weeks before the party is date. Otherwise, the guests may already have plans for that day.
Tips:

Talk to your child about the party. Find out what he or she likes and what he or she would enjoy doing with friends. This will get your child excited enough to help you create the invites.
