How to Make the Choice for Homeschooling

Shawna Smith
There are many reasons why parents undertake the choice to tutor their children at home, and these reasons are as varied as the children that go to homeschool. Despite the diversity of the geography and the reasons most parents have arrived at the decision because they believe that for whatever reason it offers the best educational choice. None of those parents will have undertaken that decision lightly; some see that the public school fails their child in a large way. That failure may be on religious grounds or the values the public school instill may conflict with the personal ethics of the family. In some areas it is merely geography the area is too sparsely populated to have a school and the parents do not want their child to be exposed to a boarding school.

However, many parents may have arrived at the decision to educate their children at home because of two factors. One of the primary advantages of homeschooling is the control it gives to parents. It takes the child out of a very specific environment and it removes certain influences that are perceived to be detrimental. An example of the basis of this type of decision may be a parental reaction to bullying within the public school system. Once the children remain at home, you have the control of whom or what influences your child. Bullying is a destructive force and the likelihood of a child being bullied at home is lessened.

However, the obverse side of that coin is that not all peer pressure is detrimental to personal growth taking a child out of school removes him or her from their friends. In terms of academic achievement, the standard of education is far higher at home, and the results are better. In America, home schooled children excel in National Spelling competitions. Many pupils who have been homeschooled go on to higher levels of education many attaining a master degree, and sometimes at a very young age. There are fewer distractions when a child studies at home they can be more focused and channel more effort in academic excellence.

The statistics, generated not simply by supporters of homeschooling by the Department of Education indicate that children who have been homeschooled are ahead of their peers academically. By the age twelve they are a grade ahead and when they have reached the eighth grades they are fourth grades of their peers within the public educational system.

However homeschooling is not a cushy option; it takes time patience and commitment on the part of the parents. Parents have to decide which program is best for their child. However, the benefits from homeschooling are enormous and better education in a fun environment. Educating your children will expose you to your child for long periods with no break and that is certainly not something that every parent will want. Again the level of education can fit your child's learning ability the teaching lessons can be tailored to individual strengths rather than overall class. Each individual child can have its learning style. In addition, children thrive and learn more in a one to one setting, which leaves more time for extra curricula activities such as musical appreciation or gardening.

Sometimes parents have to justify a decision which takes their children out of the mainstream and that can be wearing. It can be difficult at times and it does appear that the child has reached a plateau, but patience will pay off in the long term.

I am strongly considering homeschooling my oldest child. My younger children love and excel at school. Great article.
