How to Choose an Assisted Living Facility

Lucy M
Unfortunately there comes a time in life when you might have to choose an assisted living facility for a loved one. Luckily there are many to choose from. This does not make the decision any easier to make but it does give you peace of mind to know that you did your due diligence and researched and toured a few assisted living facilities.

The first thing you should do is to make a list of exactly what kind of care you are looking for. Does your loved one need constant medical care? If so then an assisted living facility may not be the right choice. Assisted living facilities are more for those that are moving from independent living to needing a little assistance. If your loved one needs constant care you might have to start looking at skilled nursing facilities or nursing homes. Assisted living facilities are not made to give constant care.

Some assisted living facilities offer a menu of available options. These can include assistance with handing out daily medication or having an urgent care doctor on-site at their resident's disposal. Nurses are always present but having a doctor there that can deal with the smaller medical issues comes in very handy.

On your list you should note what activity level you are looking for at the assisted living facility. You do not want your loved one just sitting in their room or apartment all day long. Do they have clubs or groups? Do they go on outings for shopping or for entertainment? Do they have any events brought into their facility for their residents to enjoy? Many assisted living facilities will have the local schools and universities come over with their choir or bands to entertain the residents.

You might also want to consider a facility that offers lifetime care. Some assisted living facilities are linked to skilled nursing and nursing homes. They guarantee your loved one a spot at one of their affiliated homes when the need arises. This can give you great peace of mind in knowing that if and when the time comes your loved one will be transferred over with little stress and worry.

Take the time to tour the facilities. Try to go during meal times when residents are more apt to be out and about the premises. This way you can talk to some of them and get their opinion of the place. Do they seem happy? Are they active? Be sure to also check out the security in place. Do the employees need to swipe in and do guests have to sign in before being allowed on-site? These are very important issues that you want to address right away before you choose an assisted living facility.

Ask if you can sample some of the food. Do they offer only one option for meals? Do they have take-out and do they deliver food to the apartments or rooms? Some assisted living facilities might have a formal dining room as well as an informal café. Residents can grab something light at the café and save money too. Ask if the meal plan is included in the resident fee's as these can quickly add up.

Choosing an assisted living facility does not need to be difficult if you follow these steps and do your research ahead of time.
