If you are struggling with low cost, inventive ways to help change the look of a room in your home you should think about investing in window blinds. Believe it or not, blinds can really change the character and look of a room and add a new interest and dimension to it.

There are many different types of blinds to choose from, including mini blinds, wood, horizontal and vertical. They also come in different sizes and shapes. The type of blind you choose will depend on the size of the room as well as the look you are going for.

Mini blinds are constructed from various types of materials, including aluminum, vinyl, wood and even faux wood. The type of mini blind you buy will ultimately depend on what your personal preferences are as well as maintenance and temperature issues. For high humidity areas of the home such as bathroom and kitchens, vinyl blinds are your best best. If you are concerned with maintenance, horizontal vinyl blinds are less susceptible to sun bleaching, don't break as easily, and easier to clean. Lightweight vinyl blinds tend to be the most economical but the hardware mechanism is more likely to break and thing slats can be fragile and break more easily.

Another low cost option is aluminum blinds. They are easy to maintain and very durable. When purchasing aluminum blinds, you need to consider the gauge. A larger gauge will be more durable. Slats for aluminum blinds come in gauges from 6 up to 9. Aluminum or vinyl blinds work well in room that contain wrought iron furniture.

Wood blinds will of course go well with rooms with a lot of wooden furniture. Mini blinds made of wood are better suited for humidity controlled and stable environment. If properly cared for, wood blinds can be very durable. Wood mini blinds are available in wood tones as well as solid colors. The slats on the blinds can be either painted or natural cherry, maple or oak to compliment the furniture in the room or wall colors. However, wood blinds to tend to be one of more expensive types of blinds.

One option you have available to you if you don't have the budget for investing in wood blinds is to buy faux wood blinds. These blinds look wooden but are constructed from a vinyl and wood combination. This gives them the advantages of being able to resist moisture and they are also less expensive than wood blinds. These also do not crack, fade and are easy to clean.

Slat width is one other important thing that you need to consider when you are purchasing blinds. Slat width varies and the slats themselves can be vertical or horizontal. You can also choose mini blinds that are opened and closed with a remote control or you can just do that manually.
