Can You Really Eat Bread and Lose Weight?

A lot of people have the misconception that they can't lose weight if they include bread in their diet, but that is not true if you know how to choose the right type of bread. There are several types of bread that are great for diets and will definitely help you lose weight on your diet. Here are some important things to remember the next time you go to your grocery store and want to pick out a loaf of bread.

Always Look at the Ingredient Label before Buying

It is a law that food companies must include a list of ingredients on the label and they must be listed in descending order by how much they weight. This means the first ingredient listed on the label is the most prevalent in the bread.

Reading the ingredient label comes in handy when you find a bread that says "whole wheat" but the first ingredient on the label is actually wheat flour or enriched wheat flour. If the bread has the first ingredient that says anything besides whole wheat flour or 100% whole wheat flour, then it is truly not a whole wheat bread and should not be included in your diet.

To lose weight and have a healthy diet you need to make sure you are buying bread that says it is completely made with whole wheat flour. This means there is no added extra sugars in the bread as well the bread still contains the important vitamins that are found in whole wheat.

Also, you need remember that whole grain is not the same as whole wheat. You may see a lot of products including breads and crackers that say "whole grain," but that doesn't necessarily mean these are good for a weight loss diet. If you find a whole grain bread, be sure that the first ingredient on the list says whole wheat flour or whole grain rye flour or any other grain with whole grain in front of it.

Be Aware of Sweeteners and Fillers in the Bread

If you want to lose weight and have a healthy diet you need to limit sugars and sweeteners in your diet. You may not be aware but nowadays there are plenty of breads that have extra sweeteners and fillers in the bread that may ruin any type of diet you are on. Avoid breads that have additional sweeteners that are not necessary such as corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup. These sweeteners may make the bread taste sweeter but they also will not help you with your weight loss efforts. When looking for bread that will be perfect for your healthy diet, try to pick the ones that have the shortest ingredient lists that are recognized as being healthy and natural ingredients.

The Best Breads for Weight Loss

If you are looking to incorporate bread into your diet and still lose weight, then here are some recommendations on what you should look for in the bread. It should have less than 90 calories per slice of bread as well as have 2 grams or more of fiber per slice. As mentioned it should always have whole wheat flour as the first ingredient.

Some recommended breads for a healthy weight loss diet are 100% Whole Wheat Arnold Sandwich Thins, Brownberry 100% Whole Wheat, and just about every variety of Ezekiel Bread.

If you want to lose weight you really need to make sure you know what you are eating. It's not necessary to cut bread from your diet, but you need to be informed about what type of bread can benefit you and help you to lose weight.
