The first tip is to consider how much repair and maintenance you will be willing and able to do. Composite wood products take less maintenance than natural wood. With a natural wood deck you will need to stain and seal it every year. Composite wood products consist of wood fiber, plastic and glue. They need to be cleaned from time to time, but do not need to be sealed and stained on a regular basis.
Another thing you need to consider is what is the life span of the different deck materials. Wooden deck planks are more susceptible to cracking and splintering from weather conditions, and are also subject to water damage and rot if they are not properly maintained. However, wood decks can be stained and damaged deck planks can be replaced if necessary. Composite decking can warp or fade but does not crack or splinter. It also has a tendency to stain and scratch. To repair composite decking, you will need to replace the faded, warped or scratched pieces.
Another thing that natural wood is susceptible to is damage from insects and rot. Composite decking material is not susceptible to insects but the wood fibers contained in composite materials can occasionally rot.
Your deck's appearance is a major factor in deciding what deck material to use for your new deck. Natural wooden decks are very attractive and can also add a lot of value to your property and home. There are many options of stain colors and types to choose from to help you achieve just the look you want. Wood decks can also be re-stained any time the color starts to fade. Composite wood deck material is made to resemble wood, but is more uniform in appearance. You cannot re-stain it. If it fades it will have to be replaced.
A final factor to consider is the cost of the different types of deck material. Natural wood is generally less expensive than composite wood materials.
There are pros and cons to both composite wood materials and natural wood. You will need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each in order to make your final decision. Whether you decide to go with a natural wood or composite wood deck material, you are sure to enjoy your new deck for many years to come.

Post a CommentComposite decking is the way to go if you want a deck to look AMAZING, but only for the first few weeks. Composite decking is extremely volatile and requires strong chemicals to clean. You also need to scrub it down which basically chemically strips the top layer off. But it feels and look great so if you don't mind this type of maintenance, then go with it.
