How to Choose the Best Satellite Phone Plan for Your New Satphone

Spend a Lot of Time Where There is Not Terrestrial Cellular Network? Then a Satellite Phone is for You

Steven Hoss
A satellite phone is also called a satphone. It is a mobile phone that connects to satellites that orbit around the earth. Satellite phones can either be bought new or can be rented online. These phones are commonly used in places where terrestrial cellular network is non-existent. Since they have poor reception capabilities, Satellite phones have external antennas installed in buildings or windows.

Sometimes when we purchase satellite phones, we are spoilt of choice when we have to choose the satellite phone plan we should go with. Below is a little information on choosing the right satellite phone plan:

You can get varying satellite phone plans from different service providers but the most suitable satellite phone plan is picked by the customer. Some of these satellite phone plans provided to the customer include monthly, prepaid, and hibernation plans etc. Different companies offer different plans for dialed calls while received calls are free. Here, the customer is billed only for calls dialed, therefore additional charges are avoided.

Express data phone plan - in this plan, data is sent and received at a high rate with a speed of 9.6 kbps. However, with express data phone line, users can get speeds as high as 56 kbps. Liberty plan is mainly designed for customers who use satellite phone lines only in specific situations. It is more suitable for seasonal customers or emergency management. In the burst plan, the number of minutes a customer talks increases after exceeding a particular call costs or call minutes count. This is most suitable for customers who use these satellite phones heavily because they get a bonus airtime on calls they make.

Some satellite phones switch to satellite mode when no service exists in that area or when you enter a special satellite region. This helps save on the cost of calls.

Differences in how cellular and Satellite Phones work
Cellular phones and Satellite phones are both wireless telephones. As much as they look alike, they function very differently. With cell phones, the entire network is grouped into small regions called cells and as a result, the name. In every cell, an antenna is put up, also called tower. Whenever a cellular phone shifts from a particular cell to another, a signal is transmitted to the mobile phone switching office which looks up in the database and repositions the cell phone in a new cell.

Satellite phones however use satellites orbiting the earth (LEO). On switching on a satellite phone, a signal is transmitted to the group which the satellite phone is registered with. A signal is transmitted to the closest orbiting satellite whenever a call is made. The satellite links to the ground station or the gateway which transmits the call to the desired destination.

When a good satellite phone plans is chosen, it saves money which can be used for other purposes. With satellite phones, one can stay connected friends and family, no matter which end of the globe you are.

How about providing names of companies and examples of specific plans - you know, journalism.
