How to Choose a Campground in the Poconos

The Pocono's may be known as a romantic getaway for honeymooners and couples, but it's also a popular tourist destination for those interested in the outdoors. Over 20 different campgrounds sit in the Pocono Mountains and each offers a different type of experience. Before you camp in the Pocono Mountains, you need to decide the type of camping you want.

Decide on the type of camping you plan on doing, be it camping with your family or enjoying the great outdoors. Campgrounds such as the Countryside Family Campground provide family friendly activities on the weekends and an atmosphere best suited for families. Others like Driftstone on the Delaware are better for outdoor enthusiasts and activity hounds, as the campground offers rafting, boating, kayaking and canoeing type activities.

Pick the type of amenities you need. You may want a campground that offers a convenience store, wireless internet access, electric hookups or those that provide camping for RV and motor home travelers. Before you plan your trip, make a list of the amenities you need and check with the campground about the amenities it provides.

Set a date for your Pocono Mountains camping trip. Campgrounds in the Pocono's are open at different times of the year and some close during the winter months and part of the fall when the temperatures drop. Camping during the colder months is generally more popular with adventure travelers, as they find themselves camping in snow and ice.

Look for campgrounds that contain the type of campsites needed. The campground you pick varies, depending on how you camp. Travelers may need a campground with tent sites, RV sites or a campground that rents RVs or cabins for those not bringing equipment. You may also find that you need a campground with group sites available, especially for family reunions and larger events.

Reserve your campsite beforehand. Once you decide where to camp, it's simply a matter of reserving your campsite with the campground. Then you'll need to pack your things and get the family or group ready for camping in the Pocono Mountains.

Additional Tips:

Don't forget about your budget. While some campgrounds in the Pocono's are fairly inexpensive and budget friendly, others are more expensive, especially if you plan on renting a cabin or an RV for your trip.

Keep safety in mind on your camping trip. Black bears and snakes are just two of the dangers you might face in the Pocono Mountains.
