How to Choose a College: Using Internet Resources

Jonathan
Finding the right college can be time consuming, but it is important the student chooses the right place. The college has an influence on salary potential and the development of the student's personality. There are a large variety of colleges out there, and each one has a lasting impression in a different way.

One college might have an incredible Business Program and be able to provide the student with a high paying career in the business sector afterwards. Another college might be known for its Biology Program and has a strong history of putting graduates into the top doctorate programs throughout the nation.

The last thing one wants is frustration with the school, and the desire to transfer. An unhappy student should transfer if necessary, but it is best to find a college where transferring will not be sought.

There are many resources out there helping students choose a college, however few students are aware of them. By taking the time to do research on the websites and visiting the school, the student should be able to find the college of their dreams.

College Board

College Board provides students with the tools to help them gather admission statistics for the college. The website breaks down the high school rank of incoming students and the average ACT and SAT scores. In addition, the website gives solid information regarding the percentage of freshman living in campus housing, and other important information.

Princeton Review

Princeton Review is quite similar to College Board however it takes the information a little further. Besides focusing on admissions information, the website ranks colleges based on certain items such as, most conservative, and the best food. The website also provides comments from current and past students regarding campus life and academics.

Students Review

Students Review is a website focusing on comments students post about their colleges. The website makes it possible to get an idea of what the students think without even walking on campus.

US News

The rankings from US News have received much criticism over the years, but they still remain popular to this day. The website gives students the opportunity to see how the colleges they are interested in stack up with other places. It breaks down the rankings from overall, to each individual major. Students using the website will be able to find a well-known program in their area of study.

Finding the right college takes time, but it can be well worth the effort. Picking the right college means the student will have a positive experience at the college and do well both socially and academically. Choosing the wrong college could mean low grades, a poor social life, and perhaps transfer to another college. Doing research does not guarantee the perfect college, but it can increase the odds. After doing online research, the next step would be for the student to visit the college and get a feeling for the place.
