How to Choose a Dance School for Your Child
Things to Consider to Ensure a Healthy and Happy Experience
Start Early
If you want to put your child in ballet next school year start looking now. You want to be able to watch a class session and get a feel for how the school is run and what classes are offered for which age groups and abilities.
Teachers
Many studios may be owned by a teacher who has had many years of dancing and teaching experience but the classes may be taught by students or just kids that are on the local high school cheerleading squad. Find out exactly who your child's teacher will be and what their experience is. In some ways teaching experience is more important than dance experience. It may be impressive that someone danced for Her Royal Ballet Academy but if they can't relate to children and teach what they know in an effective manner it doesn't matter. Ask if you can observe one of the teacher's classes so you can get a good feel for their style and rapport with the kids.
Floors
The type of flooring in the studio is extremely important. Your child will be jumping, twirling and running no matter what style of dance they are learning. Ideally a dance studio should have sprung (or floating) wood floor. This type of flooring consists of a wood floor that floats over foam. It should also have a non-slip surface. A springy floor will help prevent injuries as well as wear on joints.
Attire
Find out what type of clothing and shoes are required. Also find out where you can purchase these items. Some schools have preferred distributors that offer discounts for their students.
Costumes
Many times special costumes are required for competitions and recitals. Find out in advance if these cost extra and how much. You don't want to be surprised.
You may also have concerns about modesty and whether or not the clothes are appropriate for the age of your child. If you do, ask to see samples of the styles of costumes they will be wearing.
Recitals and Competitions
Most schools have a recital at the end of their school year. This is a great opportunity for parents and family members to see their little one perform. Some schools also participate in competitions. Either all the classes will compete in different age divisions or the school will have special competition teams. Usually students are required to try out for the competition teams. Find out what the school you are interested in does and make sure you feel comfortable with it. Many parents just want to enroll their children in dance for physical exercise, fun and to build their self esteem. They may not particularly want a competitive atmosphere. It is up to you and your child to decide.
Recommendations
Don't forget that one of the best ways to find a dance school is through other parent's recommendations. Just remember to consider the points listed above and ask questions so that you can ensure that your child has the best experience learning to dance.
