How to choose a dirt bike: Basic considerations
Decide on a budget before shopping for your new dirt bike. You may find that you are limited to a smaller bike or less options because of the amount of money you have to spend. Purchasing a used dirt bike can be a good way to get more features at a lower price. Look for a bike store that has experience selling dirt bikes. A dealer who sells mostly street bikes may not know the best way to set up a dirt bike for your needs. Check your local registration requirements if you plan to ride your dirt bike on the street. This will require additional features that are often not included on a standard dirt bike. Turn signals, headlights, and taillights are usually required in order to make a dirt bike street legal.
How to choose a dirt bike: Skill level
Consider your ability level and preferred type of riding. If you are a novice rider, do not get a bike that is too large or powerful for you to handle. Not only is it unsafe, but you may become frustrated and not even enjoy riding your new dirt bike. There are different types of bikes for specialties like motocross, trail riding, and enduro racing. Think about your skill level when it comes to the mechanics of your dirt bike. If you are handy with tools, you can purchase a more complex dirt bike than someone who has no mechanical experience at all. A simpler bike is better for those who cannot make their own repairs because there will be less parts that can break down.
How to choose a dirt bike: Body size
Choose a dirt bike that is the right size for your body. If you are over 225 pounds, you will probably need at least a 250cc engine. Smaller riders will probably be more comfortable with an 80cc engine or 125cc engine. If the dirt bike is for a child that is still growing, choose a bike that is slightly too large to give him or her room to grow into it.
