How to Choose a Front Door Color

Catherine Woods
Your front door is what welcomes guests into your home, so you want to make sure that it makes the right first impression. You want to be careful that the color of your front door welcomes guests and does not scare them away. You can make sure it does just that by taking four things into consideration; your home's siding and trim color, your home's style and the statement you want to make. Using these for things will help make sure you choose the right color for your front door.

Siding Color

The first thing you want to make sure of is that the color you choose for your front door goes with the color of your existing siding or brick. It is not likely that you are going to want to change out your brick so that you can have a particular door color. So when you are going through paint chips this is the first thing you should hold them up to. If a color does not work with your siding, then it is not a contender.

Trim Color

Next you are going to see how your color options work with your home's trim color. You front door color is likely going to be sitting next to the trim, so you want these two colors to work well together. Of the color options you have left, what works with your home's trim? Again, anything that does not work with it needs to be eliminated.

Home's Style

You are also going to want to consider your home's style when choosing a front door color. For example, if you live in a cottage style home, a lime green front door may not be the best choice for your home. Look through magazines to get an idea of what works for your home's style and what does not. After you get a good idea of what works you should be able to decide for yourself what other colors you should eliminate.

Making a Statement?

Now that you have considered your home's style and colors, your own taste comes into play. What kind of statement you want to make to the people that see your house. Is bold the only way to go for you? Or is a more subdued tone your style? Once you have answered that question, you should be able to eliminate any other stragglers that will not work for your front door. Now that you have gone through and eliminated possibly hundreds of potential colors, you are likely to only have a few left. Which of the colors that you have left would make you the most happy to see every day? That is your new front door color. Now get out that paint brush and paint your front door that perfect color.
