Have you heard of Geocaching? It is the newest and trend and is coming very popular very fast!
In order to take part in Geocaching, you must have a GPS. What Geocaching is that several people all over the world are putting little treasures such as pens, pictures, toys, and other small items into little boxes. They then leave them in a hidden area. The GPS will pick up where these boxes are, and you can then go to look for them. Usually the GPS will not tell you exactly where it is. Instead, it will give you hints and clues to help you to find the box. After you have found it, you can swap something that is in the box for something you may have. Then you write down on a log what day you found it.
In order to begin doing this you have to sign up on your GPS for these types of alerts. Also, you must have the type of GPS that is intended for hikers not for motorists. These GPS devices will tell the hiker where to go by show them a straight, bold line. It is very simple and once you get to one spot, it will show you how to get to the next one. Some of these types of GPS are perfect for the outdoor person as well. They are perfect for the hunter, fisherman, hiker, rock climber and more! This is because certain kinds of these GPS even have calendars that have sunrise and sunset tracks on them. They also have weather reports which will help you to better plan your outdoor activities.
Many times these GPS will also have roadways on them, however they are not intended for the driver. Some of these have very good graphics and topographic features that can help you to map out the terrain.
The best brands for the hiking GPS are Garmin and Magellan. The cheapest one costs around one hundred and fifty dollars and they can go up to six hundred dollars. What determines the price of the GPS? The price is determined on the features as well as the capability of the GPS system. For examples, the more expensive GPS systems have longer lasting battery lives than the cheaper ones. Also the reliability of the guidance is much better on the six hundred dollar ones.
Does this mean that you may get lost with the other ones? No, however, it will be much easier to follow on the nicer models. You can purchase these at sporting goods stores, stores such as Best Buy or Radio Shack will sell them as well. When you go to buy one of these types of GPS, play around with it at the store first. Also, ask any questions that you may have about the GPS. By doing this, you will be able to find the best GPS for you.
