How to Choose a Great Wedding Dress

Katherine Huether
I chose my wedding dress from a catalog after trying on several dresses at the dress shop. Frustrated by what I was saying, I asked to see some pictures of dresses. I finally saw it on one of the pages. It was a straight cut dress, off the shoulder, with roses on the neckline. It had a small train, too. In other words, it was just my style.

I got lucky. I found something that was perfect on my first outing. But wedding dress shopping can get frustrating pretty quickly. How do you find the right wedding dress without losing your mind? Luckily, I have some tips that will make your life easier.

Know your Style

It all starts with being in touch with what your personal style is. I already know what I like when it comes to clothes. In fact, decorating a garment with roses is always a winner for me. And, I know that the straight cut would look good on my figure. What kind of dresses like good on you? Do you have certain embellishments and dress styles that look best on you or that suit your personality? If you have an idea of what you want before you set out, it will make your life a lot easier.

Look Through Catalogs

Before you even go wedding dress shopping it helps to know what's out there. Even if you know what your style is, you need to see how that style fits in with the current trends and what the designers are putting out so you can know which dress shops to target. If you call ahead you can get a feel for which designers they feature and if they have the styles you want to check out.

Consider Vintage

Don't see anything that you like in the dress shops? Consider getting a second hand or vintage wedding gown. This works especially well if you are on a budget of if you have an idea for a dress that isn't being featured in the shops. Besides, vintage and used dresses tell a story and that's pretty cool, right?

Have One Made

Don't see a new or used dress that appeals to you? Consider getting a dress custom made. This is perfect for the bride who has a vision of what kind of dress she wants and can't find it. This is your big day - everything needs to be perfect, right?

Finding the right dress doesn't need to be exhausting. There are things you can do to make sure you find the right dress for your big day.
