How to Choose the Ideal Pet Door

Scratch, scratch, scratch. Fluffy wants to come inside. Scratch scratch scratch. Fluffy wants to go outside. Scratch scratch scratch. Fluffy wants to come inside again! Can't he make up his mind?

Does this sound familiar? Face it, cats and dogs have a fickle nature. One minute they want to bathe in the sun, the next minute they want to take a nap. It is for this reason that purchasing or building a pet door is a really great idea. A pet door allows a dog or cat to enter and exit a home at will. This way, a dog that needs to go doesn't have to wait for you. Or if a cat is outside, it doesn't need you to let it in so it can go use the litter box.

A pet door also offers a pet more space and opportunity to explore and play. I think it is cruel to force a pet to stay indoors all day. Growing up, my parents never let our cat out to play. It would scratch at the deck-door all day, whining to go outside. It broke my heart to watch. Cats, just like dogs, are much happier if they can frolic outdoors.

Another advantage of a pet door is that a cat or dog can immediately run indoors in case of bad weather or a dangerous predator. On the other hand, a dog can use a pet door to scare off would-be trespassers or intruders. Furthermore, a pet door can be a major time saver for you as an owner. You don't have to worry about continually letting your pet inside or outside. No more waking up in the middle of the night to let Fluffy outside for a dump!

Do you realize that a pet door can also save you money? How many of you have discovered ripped up couch fibers or knocked over tables? This is usually the result of pets being bored, with nothing to do. Can you really blame them though? How would you feel confined in a boring, empty house all day? By letting your cat or dog move in and out of your home at will, it keeps them busy, entertained, and less prone to damaging furniture.

In case of bad weather or some other immediate threat, you can lock the door and block your pet's access. Some pet doors even come with halfway locks. For instance, suppose your cat is outdoors. When she comes back in, you want to keep her indoors because of an incoming thunderstorm. You can set the door lock to allow entry, but block exit.

If you are still uncertain about purchasing a pet door, just think about how little Fluffy feels. Doesn't Fluffy deserve some freedom in his itty bitty, boring life? I think so. How about you?
