Every jewelry box has the basics such as ring holders, necklace or earring compartments but what you should take note of is the style of the compartments and storage space. Here are some tips for the not so obvious choices if you're in the need of a jewelry box.
Material
There are many styles available with the most popular styles in wood or wood veneer. Some are hand crafted in real woods such as cherry, maple, teak, burlwood and others but wood is not the only material available. There are a multitude of boxes made in sandstone, leather, fabric and even carved ostrich egg. No matter what your preference is it's important to choose something that will accommodate your jewelry, last long and compliment the other items in your room.
Drawers
The style you choose will dictate what types of drawers offered. If the box is tall and narrow the drawers may be too short to place a necklace in. Besides the width and the height of the drawers; make sure the drawers slide in-and-out smoothly without catching. Some drawers will also offer ring rolls but you might have more rings than you can fit so choose which type of drawer offers the best type of storage space for your inventory of jewelry best.
Earring Holes
If you love earrings invest in a jewelry box that has sliding earring stands or earring holes. Earring stands are available in taller jewelry boxes or in armories. These earring holders make each pair of earrings easily accessible and in plain view so you can see what earrings you do have.
Slots
Ring slots are another place to store your rings without the use of ring rolls. Lori Greiner who has created jewelry boxes for years; developed a multitude of styles sold on QVC which contains ring slots instead of rolls. Ring slots are thin slits cut into a styrofoam type material that you can set your rings into. The rings stay in place and the styrofoam can be removed to lay your pieces flat if you prefer to store your jewelry that way.
Hooks
Are you trying to find the perfect spot in your jewelry box to store your necklaces? Besides long drawers some jewelry boxes offer hooks to hang necklaces and long jewelry pieces. Although the hooks are a nice accessory you'll have to decide if the placement is where you want it to be. If the hooks are in a shorter style jewelry box then check if there is a compartment underneath. If there is, you'll have to decide if it's long enough to store your necklaces so its not overly crowded. The last thing you want is to have pearls rubbing against a rough material.
Lining
Silver and gold jewelry can tarnish so the inner lining of your jewelry box is going to be as important as the outer appearance. Anti-tarnish linings will keep your jewelry safe from tarnishing for decades after purchasing the jewelry box.
