How to Choose Kitchen Cabinet Color

Catherine Woods
The color of your kitchen cabinets is what sets the tone for the room. It is typically the most predominant color of the room, which makes it the most important color to get right. To add to the pressure, kitchen cabinets come every color from white to chocolate to bright red and even black. With so many color options, how to do pick the right one for your kitchen cabinets? Simply use these five factors to help you choose your new kitchen cabinet color.

Kitchen's Size

The first thing you want to look at when you are choosing a new color for your kitchen cabinets is how big your kitchen is. If you have a small kitchen, choosing a dark cabinet color can make the room seem even smaller. On the other hand, if you have a very large kitchen, choosing a very light color for your cabinets can make the space seem vast. So, a medium to light tone for a small space and a dark to medium tone for a large space is probably the safest bet for your cabinets.

Kitchen's Lighting

In addition to your kitchen size, how well your kitchen is lighted will also need to be considered. Though most large kitchens can handle dark cabinets, if the room is not well lit the dark cabinets may make the room feel like a large cave. So no matter your room size, if you have a kitchen with poor lighting, be sure to lean toward lighter cabinetry.

Kitchen's Style

You also want to take into consideration the style of your kitchen when choosing your cabinet color. If you have a traditional kitchen, you are probably not going to want to choose red or black as a cabinet color. Though these colors may be perfect for other kitchens, they are not likely to be suitable to yours. If you are not sure what will work with your style of kitchen, be sure to look through magazines to get a feel for what works. These magazines will also give you a better idea of what you are looking for, so don't overlook them.

Other Wood Tones

If you are like most, you are probably going to be choosing a wood tone for your kitchen cabinets. If this is the case, look around your home at the other wood tones that are used. Look at the flooring, doors, molding and other cabinetry and see if there is a common wood tone throughout the home. If so, you should probably match your cabinet color to the other wood in the home. Matching the other wood will give your home a more cohesive and planned out feeling. If you just can't stick with the same tone throughout the house, at least try to pick a tone that will contrast the other wood well.

Mass Appeal

Finally, make sure that the cabinet color you choose will appeal to most people if you ever intend on selling the home. Most people do not plan on staying in one home the rest of their lives and so it is important when remodeling something like a kitchen to make sure the cabinets will not turn off buyers. Just because you love the idea of bright red cabinets does not mean others will too. So if you go for a bold choice like red, be prepared to either repaint the cabinets before you sell or be ready for a long wait to sell your home.By using these five guidelines, you will be able to narrow down your cabinet color choices much faster. In the end you should only have a few color contenders and all you have to do is choose the one you like best. Now get to painting or staining your cabinets so you can enjoy the beautiful choice you made.
