Firstly, you need to find out the history of the company. If it has just been set up by a greenhorn landscaper fresh out from his art school, chances are that he or she will not have enough experience to do the demanding jobs that you pose. On the other hand, if they have been established for a long time with a long list of commendations, you can be sure that they are top notch experts in their field. Of course you should not totally rely on what you see or hear, do ask for their portfolios and ask if they have won any national or international landscaping competitions. The more competitions they win, the better and more reliable they are, but bear in mind that their charges will also be higher.
However, if you decide to engage a smaller company because of costs, you need to check into little details. You even need to know how capably the company is led. This is because if the company is small, chances are there are only a couple of designers and a few landscapers with one major player in the company. Hence whatever their workload is will be handled by these few people. If they get many orders at the time your place yours, they may be too frazzled to pay yours extra attention. Sometimes, they may even get their schedules mixed up and not turn up when they're supposed to. As long as it is a real mistake, it is forgivable and their workload also proves that they do have a large base of clients-meaning that you need to worry les about their reputation. If you do not mind these extra hassles, then go on ahead and engage them. However, do not be too trusting as while the company itself may be reliable, the construction workers they engage may not-and they may even try to rob your house if you are unlucky enough. So whatever the case, please take care.
Moving on, you should find out how many cases a landscaping company is doing at a go. Sometimes they might be nervous in telling you such things, so do be considerate. However, most do not mind and if it helps to set a customer's mind at ease, so much the better. All the same, if they are handling too many clients at a go, you may want to reconsider hiring them as other companies may have more time for you and thus more room for flexibility and schedule changes. All if all, if you choose a good landscaping firm, your landscaped dream will soon emerge!
