How to Choose Life Jackets for Your Family

If you are getting ready for the boating season while you are preparing your boat to go out on the waters you also need to check the life jackets for the whole family. Make sure they are still fitting correctly, and get them ready for the upcoming season of boating on the waters.

Almost all states require life jackets on for everyone on the boat. Most states require that you have children less than a certain age wear a life jacket at all times while on the water and while you are boating. They have all different types of life jackets now many are comfortable that your children will wear them without much argument. Make sure that they fit the child correctly, and that they haven't outgrown them from the previous season of boating. You will want your children to wear their jackets anytime you are on the water, even if you anchored. Adults should wear their life jackets while on the water. But most states don't make that a law, if you chose not to wear your life jacket, at least keep it close by in case you need to put it on in an emergency.

There are different sizes and styles for life jackets. The Best way to find your correct size is to go to the store and try on several different types and sizes. You want it to be snug, yet not tight. You want it to stay on incase you have to abandon ship and jump in the water, you don't want it to come off when you need it the most.

They now make lightweight life jackets that are not as hot as the old orange style life jackets. These are more comfortable to wear most of the time you don't even realize that you are wearing the jacket. You want a jacket that will save you yet allow you to move around like you don't have one on. If you are able to sew a whistle on each jacket this will increase your chances of getting someone's attention if you fall overboard. I sewed one on each one of my children's jacket and advised them how and when to use it.

If you are planning on take your dog or pet on the waters with you for the day, they also have life jackets for pets. It is important to consider getting them a lifejacket a lot. If they fall in the water it will be hard to get them back on the boat. Most pet life jackets have a place you can scoop them back onto the boat.

The Most important thing about choosing a life jacket is that it is US Coast Guard approved for the waters that you will be boating in, and also that you wear it or have it ready to put in just incase there is an emergency. If there is an emergency you may not have the time to search for your life jacket which could save your life.
