How to Choose a Natural Pet Food

Natural and organic foods are all the rage with people. Shouldn't the same be true for your pet? We've all seen the commercials about how much healthier natural foods are for humans. The same applies to natural foods for your pet.

Natural foods are chocked full of natural ingredients that your pet needs to stay healthy. Unlike most pet foods, natural foods are minimally processed, which means more goodness is left in. Honestly, how healthy are preservatives that you can't even pronounce, let alone identify?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture sets strict guidelines for any pet food that wishes to be labeled as natural or organic. While the guidelines may make a small booklet, the basic rules state that natural foods may not contain most preservatives, pesticides, antibiotics, or artificial ingredients. This makes the food not only taste better, but settle on your pet's stomach easier.

Most of a pet's nutrition comes from poultry, beef, and fish. Humans don't want to eat anything filled full of growth hormones and drugs. Why? It's unhealthy, not to mention, no where near as appetizing as all natural. Humans like to know their food is raised humanely and fed quality, natural foods. Our pets want the same thing.

In order to build a better immune system, our pets need eat the right food. Natural foods are full of all the vitamins our pet's need to maintain good health. People take care of themselves by eating better. It's our job as pet owners to make sure our pets eat the right foods as well.

Pet owners should be aware; however, that price does not determine the best food. The best foods depend on the ingredients. Byproducts and synthetic preservatives should be avoided. Some brands state they use "human-grade ingredients". This is a good sign the company is thinking more about the health of your pet than making a large profit. Another ingredient to be careful about is meal. Check to be sure the meal is listed as coming from an animal such as a chicken. Often times, meal is a byproduct and therefore not natural.

The one downfall of natural or organic pet foods is the price. Just as with human foods, most natural food prices are for some reason higher. The old cliché, you get what you pay for, works well in this case. You don't always have to buy the highest priced foods, but you will pay a little more than with your average pet food.

For pet owners looking to save a little, you may want to visit the websites of some pet food brands to see if they offer a rewards program. Sometimes, certain brands will offer coupons once you earn so many points, or buy so many cans or bags of their product.

Another alternative is to consider the store brand. Check to see there is a store brand version of your favorite natural pet food. Compare the ingredients. If they check out, you could very well save several dollars. Remember, store brand pet food is often times made at the same factory as the name brand.

Remember, your pet is part of the family. You wouldn't hesitate to take care of your child's health, so why skimp on your pet?
