The very first thing that you should think of is size. Can your home handle a large dog? Will your landlord even permit dogs over a certain number of inches? These are some good questions to ask before you make the mistake of getting a large breed of dog that you are unable to keep.
The next thing that you should take into consideration is age. Obviously everyone thinks that puppies are just the most adorable things ever but what about all of the involved training? Are you willing to undergo potty and obedience training with your new puppy? If you are perhaps too busy right now or it just does not sound like fun you can easily adopt a dog that is only a year or two old, and still very much a puppy, from any shelter completely trained. You can even opt for a dog that is older than this and completely bypass all of the puppy energy and mischief. Would you rather have an older and mellower dog? These are some great questions to pose to yourself.
What breed are you looking for? It is important to know about many of the behavioral and physical issues associated with different breeds of dogs. Learn about these for any dog you may be interested in. Are you even interested in a purebred at all? Often times purebreds have limited gene pools which lead to health conditions later on in life, have you considered adopting a mutt?
And finally would you prefer to have a male or a female? Often times people have preferences toward one sex or the other. There are behavioral differences that may better suit what you are looking for in a dog, be sure to do some more research in this area and decide which sex of dog you want to get.
Hopefully you are now able to take these simple tips on how to choose the perfect dog for your home and select an outstanding new dog. Remember not to rush it, adding a dog to your family is a big decision and it is important that you select the ideal dog for your given situation.
