How to Choose the Perfect Pet Name

If you have recently bought a new puppy or if you're thinking about it then you're probably wondering how to come up with the perfect unique name for the pet. However, the process of picking the name can be quite difficult, especially when your creativity is running low.

Dogs are very social, yet independent animals and should be named accordingly. Whenever you finally choose a name, keep in mind that the name will be with your dog for life. For instance, it may not be a wise decision to name a dominant male dog a cute name, and you may want to think twice about naming a small toy dog a male name.

I recommend waiting a few days after getting your new dog before choosing a unique name. Most people have an idea prior to getting a pet as to what the name should be, but sometimes when you finally see the animal you realize that name doesn't fit its personality or appearance. By waiting, you could pick up on some of the characteristics of the new dog that will give you the necessary inspiration. For instance, if your dog scratches a lot then how about "Scratch?" If your dog is the life of the party then why not name it "Vegas?" Is your dog a begger? How about the name "Hobo?"

Whenever it comes time to naming your dog, it is important to remember to choose a unique name that cannot be confused with any normal everyday commands. For instance, don't name your dog "Pete" if they understand and recognize that word "Treat." Otherwise, you'll constantly be reaching into the treat bowl and your dog is now loving their name. Names like "Kit" can be confused with "Sit" and so on.

Stick to something simple. Being unique doesn't require a long, elaborate name. A dog's memory is limited to usually only one or two syllable words. A name with only two syllables is easier to distinguish from background noise, otherwise they'll ignore you and assume that you're not talking to them. Use common sense when you name them. Do not choose something that is profane, or that can be offensive to someone else. One effective test is to consider whether or not you would feel comfortable calling your dog's name out loud in a crowded place. Novelty names are cute until you must track down your dog because they took off running into a crowded area. It'll leave you embarrassed and unable to call your dog when you need them out in public.

Pay close attention to the different types of media that is around you when naming your animal, whether it is from a movie, television show, or book. The most unique names come from the television or novel, and what better way to pay tribute to your favorite book than to name your dog after one of the characters? I always find it's usually a great conversation piece to explain that your pet's name came from a particular novel or movie. For instance, I always thought the name "Baggins" from the character Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Ring series was a cute, unique name.

Think outside of the box. Think of trips, maybe to different locations across the world that you've been that you think would make great names. Examples here include: London, Maui, Paris, Tokyo, Egypt, etc… No matter what you name your dog, just make sure that it's unique and it defines their independence.
