How to Choose that Perfect Shade of Carpet Color

When it comes to decorating, one of the biggest issues for many homeowners is deciding on the right color of carpet that will compliment the décor' theme. While choosing a color is important when it comes to your décor theme, the lifestyle you lead is just as important. For example, if you tend to host a lot of parties, you may want to avoid pale carpet colors since they tend to show stains very easily. If you have children or pets, pale carpet colors are obviously not a good choice for the very same reason. However, a lifestyle isn't the only reason you may want to avoid a shade of color.

While a darker shade can be fabulous for some rooms, it's not so fabulous if you have a small room with dark walls. Too many dark colors can make a small room seem even smaller.

Pale carpet and pale walls have the opposite effect on a small room. However, a pale color combination in a large room can make it appear too large.

If you are looking for a way to make a dark room seem brighter, a pale carpet color can help. Think white, powder blue, pale yellow, mint green.

Cool colors such as a sea green or ocean blue can add a calming effect to any bedroom, while warm shades of red, orange and yellow can make a living room seem cozy and warm.

Shades of navy blue, moss green and chocolate brown are great for a child's room. Almost any dark shade of color can hide stains. You don't have to limit your child's room to bland and boring colors. Just keep in mind though, while darker shades can hide stains, it can show off lint.

Not so sure about a simple color? Carpets with patterns can provide a unique look for any room as well as hide stains.

Have a pale wall? Choose a bold color carpet to bring out the room and give it some color.

Avoid carpet colors that are the same color as your walls or furniture. Too much of the same color is not a good thing!

Don't limit yourself to simple shades. If you love purple, there's no reason you can love a carpet that is your favorite shade of purple.

Need more ideas? Browse through home decorating magazines for the perfect color combinations. Don't forget to include your furniture when considering your carpet color choices. Also, keep in mind that just because that shade of carpet looks great in the store, doesn't mean it will look the same at home. Ask about a carpet sample and try it out at home before you choose that perfect color. You may find that shade just isn't as perfect as you thought.
