How to Choose Plus Sized Lingerie

Susie Lee
As a boudoir photographer I have photographed women of many different shapes and sizes. I know that all women can be sexy in lingerie. It is just a matter of finding the right lingerie for your body type. Luckily there are many options for plus sized girls from both major labels and designers that specialize only in plus sizes.

There are a few things you should consider when picking lingerie. This article will help you learn how to find the right fit and pick styles that will flatter your curvy figure.

Almost nothing else is as important as finding lingerie that fits correctly. Be honest with yourself about what size you are. Squeezing into a size that is too small isn't as flattering as a garment that fits properly no matter what the size on the tag says. When you get home you can always remove the tags to keep the size to yourself. It's a good idea to remove tags anyway since they show through sheer and lacy fabrics.

If possible, try on each piece you are considering buying. If you order online make sure they have a good return policy and consider buying two sizes and returning the one that doesn't fit as well.

The two biggest mistakes I see women make is buying a bra with a band size that is too small and picking panties that don't fit. To get a bra that fits correctly you may want to go to a lingerie store that does fittings. They will measure your rib cage. If you are in between sizes always go larger. Cup size is important too because you don't want anything spilling out. Make sure the straps on the bra don't cut into your shoulders. Picking styles with wider straps and making sure most of the support is coming from the band on the bra will help.

Panties should feel comfortable and not press into your skin on the sides. Stretchy lace panties with wide sides are perfect for everyone including plus sized girls. Ruffled panties are also very cute and can disguise a not-so-smooth behind.

The right style of lingerie will flatter your figure. Plus sized girls have many options but there are also some things you should stay away from. Avoid clingy or stretchy cotton fabrics and opt instead for silk or satin that skims over your curves or structured materials that will provide support. Thongs and skimpy styles can show a lot of skin making you appear larger than you really are.

Babydoll slips and corsets are usually always good choices. Make sure that the babydoll slip you choose doesn't have excessive gathering, which can add bulk. Slightly flared and A-line silhouettes work the best. Corsets should fit well and not have too wide of a gap where they lace up. Try a corset with a halter-top. They really flatter the bust line and hide unflattering skin folds in your armpit area.

Pay attention to patterns and prints. Choose prints with large flowers or polka dots rather than small prints. The proportion of the design can make you look smaller. Stripes are also something that you should be careful about. Horizontal stripes can make you look wide while vertical strips can stretch out at your widest parts. It is probably advisable to stay away from stripes all together. However, vertical and diagonal detailing in your lingerie can make you appear taller and slimmer. Examples of this include piping in a contrasting color in a princess line in the bodice of the garment or wrap styles that lead your eye diagonally across the body.

Color is also a consideration. Usually dark colors minimize and slim your look. Black lingerie is a perennial favorite. But, you don't have to stay away from colors, just choose darker and richer shades. Pastels can be worn on areas that you want to highlight. Think about trying an empire waist slip with a light top and a darker bottom to show off your cleavage while slimming the rest of your body.

Plus sized lingerie is easier than ever to find. You shouldn't have a problem finding the right lingerie for you. With some careful shopping you can build a super sexy plus sized lingerie wardrobe.
