How to Choose Your Prom Dress for 2007

Angela Stratello
Prom dresses for 2007 are embellished with beads, embroidered or have flounces reminiscent of the 50's. Elegance is the word this year with sheaths gaining prominence but traditional ball gowns remain a popular choice. Colors are striking in jewel tones, the brighter the better to catch your dates attention.

New Prom Dresses for 2007

Jovani is one of the most popular prom designers this year, virtually every online store is featuring their dresses. If you have one of theirs in mind, make sure you order early enough to buy your size and to allow for alterations.

Jovani prom dresses are sleek and sexy with a body hugging torso and many with slits "up to here" or flounces that show off your curves.

The most popular prom dresses are gowns that mimic something worn by your favorite star. Jovani has designed gowns fashioned after popular dresses worn by Charlize Theron, Miss America 2007 and Kate Hudson in the movie, "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days".

Perhaps a traditional ball gown is more your style. Tiffany prom dresses may have the ball gown shape but their designs are far from typical. Beaded and embroidered bodices, subltle color combinations and criss-cross backs will make you stand out in a crowd and are perfect for the not so typical girl.

How Do You Choose A Gown for Your Figure?

1. Choose Your Figure Type

Petite - A full skirted, wide swept ball gown can overwhelm a petite figure. To make the most of your curves, choose a body hugging slim sheath with a side slit. If the look you're after is elegant and sophisticated, jewel tones and simple embellishment will take you there.

Full Hips - A strapless, form fitting bodice with a full layered skirt will flatter your curves, give you an elegant look and camoflage your bottom line. Any embellishment that makes the eye travel up and down will elongate your figure.

Full Bust - Wide set, 2" straps, a-la Beyonce's Jovani gown will accentuate your curves and you won't have to worry about bouncing out of your top while you dance. If you have your heart set on strapless, enough boning and full bust coverage will protect your assets.

2. Choose Your Prom Dress Style

Are you going for an elegant look or more the fairy tale full ball gown? Strapless or full bodice? Backless? Once you choose your style, it's easier to search using the terms you've set your heart on.

3. Choose Your Colors

Blonde - Pastel colors, gold, and red look good on blondes.

Redhead - Aqua, lime green, emerald green, peach, nude, vivid blues and greens work well.

Brunette - Jewel tones, black, white, red will play up your hair.

4. Choose Your Budget

What a disappointment if you have your heart set on a $400 prom dress only to find that you can't afford it. Search according to your budget and you won't be heartbroken later. Do compare the more expensive prom dresses so you're aware of the styles but shop in your budget range.

5. Consider Buying Online

A simple search for "prom dresses" or "prom gowns" will bring you many results. If you shop early enough you can feel comfortable you'll receive it early enough.

6. Choose Your Accessories With Care

How you wear your hair, the color and style of your dress along with your personal preferences all have a bearing on the prom accessories you choose. Pay attention to how the dress is accessorized online and you'll have a head start. Most gowns are accessorized by professionals online. If you follow their lead, you can't go wrong.
